Canggu Shortcuts: Beat the traffic like a local

Words by Royal Bali Group

Back to Journal

If you have ever tried to cross Canggu on a scooter between 5 and 7 p.m., you already know the pain: endless queues on Jalan Batu Bolong, honking horns, and a 10-minute ride that somehow turns into 45 minutes of pure frustration.

Good news: locals and expats who have been living here for a while have cracked the code. They are called shortcuts. Small lanes and gangs that let you cut through the neighbourhood while bypassing the main roads entirely. Here's the complete guide.

— CONTEXT —

Why is Canggu so congested?

Canggu has grown at a staggering pace over the past few years. What was once a quiet village of rice paddies has become one of Bali's most sought-after neighbourhoods, drawing digital nomads, surfers, and travelers from all over the world.

The result: road infrastructure that simply hasn't kept up. Jalan Batu Bolong, the main artery, gets completely jammed from late afternoon. The intersection between Batu Bolong and Berawa is widely considered one of Bali's worst traffic bottlenecks.

That is where the shortcuts come in, narrow lanes that locals have always known, and that newcomers discover with a mix of relief and pure delight.

— THE ESSENTIALS —

4 shortcuts you absolutely need to know

01

Batu Mejan  →  Pererenan :

This route hugs the coastline and winds through stunning rice paddies. It connects Echo Beach directly to Pererenan without ever touching the main road. On top of skipping traffic, you will ride through lush greenery with open views of the rice fields especially beautiful at sunset.

02

Padang Linjong  →  Pererenan

Arguably the most well-known shortcut in Canggu. This lane bypasses the infamous Batu Bolong junction completely. It's the shortcut you'll hear mentioned in every café and co-working space in the area. Open 24 hours.

03

Canggu  →  Pererenan

Less known by tourists, this gang cuts diagonally across the neighbourhood. It passes a handful of authentic warungs and gives you a glimpse of a quieter, more local side of Canggu — far from the tourist buzz. Heavily used by Balinese residents.

04

Batu Bolong  →  Berawa

At the heart of Canggu lies a true maze of parallel back lanes. Jalan Subak Sari is the backbone of this network. It lets you move from one end of the neighbourhood to the other without ever hitting the congested main roads, and you will pass some of the best spots along the way.

Canggu's shortcuts are far more than a traffic hack, they are a way to experience the neighbourhood differently, at the rhythm of rice fields and shaded back lanes. Once you know them, you'll never go back.
